Curricular and Instructional Objectives
The Governing Board believes that a dynamic curricular and instructional program is built upon periodic assessment and revision. The Governing Board further believes that assessment and revision of curriculum and instruction must be guided by explicit objectives in order to ensure a systematic approach. The following objectives, therefore, shall serve as primary guidelines during assessment and revision of curriculum and instruction:
A. Curriculum and instruction in the District shall be a unified process; i.e., unnecessary duplication, fragmentation, and redundancy shall be eliminated.
B. Curriculum and instruction in the District shall be a consistent process, i.e., every student in every school will be guaranteed a common, well-defined education. Though instructional delivery systems may vary by school, basic curricular and proficiency expectations shall apply across the District.
C. Curriculum and instruction shall ensure that the four (4) year course of study for every student of the District is established and maintained in accordance with a selected career path.
D. Curriculum and instruction in the District shall be so designed as to guarantee that important skills, knowledge, and attitudes are not omitted.
E. During the analysis and revision process, special attention shall be given to the determination of what must be required of each student and what elective options should be afforded.
F. Curriculum and instruction in the District shall provide each student with opportunities to learn life skills.
Observance Days
September 11, in each year shall be observed as 9/11 Education Day. On 9/11 Education Day, each public school shall dedicate a portion of the school day to age-appropriate education on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
September 25, in each year, shall be observed as Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Celebration Day. On Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Celebration Day, each public school in this state shall dedicate the majority of the school day to civics education.
If Sandra Day O'Connor Civics Celebration Day or 9/11 Education Day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or other day when a public school is not in session, the preceding or following school day shall be observed in the public school as the holiday.
The Superintendent is directed to emphasize the use of the resources developed by the State Board of Education relating to civics education which align with the academic standards in social studies pursuant to A.R.S. 15-701 and 15-701.01.
