The District's educational philosophy is based upon the acquisition and application of knowledge. It is our objective to provide experiences that will allow our students to be in harmony with nature and themselves and to become productive, self-sustaining citizens. We affirm our responsibility to do everything within our power that will substantially aid in the optimum development of all students so that they will be able to participate successfully and to contribute effectively in both the Native American and the larger contemporary technological societies.
While the educational programs of the District are to assist in the development of the potential growth of each student regardless of ethnic heritage, religion, sex, or economic status, the Governing Board and the District administration are mindful that the great majority of the members of the student body are Navajo and other Native Americans, whose language, cultural practices, and value systems are indispensable elements of their personal development.
The curriculum, a most important District priority, will be reflective of the programs that will strengthen opportunities for growth and for development in the Native American culture and that of the multicultural society at large. The curriculum design will ensure a high standard of academic quality. The primary component will consist of the broad general educational foundation and a strong college preparatory emphasis, with national grade-level standards. A second component will encompass an innovative vocational/allied arts program. The third component will be concerned with providing the cross-cultural base, fundamental to the curriculum and methodology. The curriculum will recognize the special needs of the gifted and of the handicapped.
The District will recognize its responsibility to the community at large regarding the continuing educational needs of parents and young adults. The community education model will become the basis for on-campus and outreach programs.
